Boca Grande merchants are sounding the alarm over proposed parking changes by the Lee County Commissioners that could devastate the island’s economy. Plans are underway to impose two-hour parking limits in the downtown district and restrict beach access parking to residents only. Local business owners argue these changes would discourage tourists and seasonal visitors from spending time—and money—on the island. Boca Grande thrives on leisurely day-trippers who browse boutiques, dine at local restaurants, and enjoy the beach, often for more than just a couple of hours. Limiting their ability to park would sharply reduce foot traffic and hurt already fragile small businesses. Merchants fear this could lead to declining sales, business closures, and a loss of the island's unique character. Additionally, restricting beach parking to residents would make public beach access nearly impossible for non-residents, a move many call exclusionary. The community is urging the commissioners to reconsider and seek a balanced solution that supports both residents and local commerce.
