Back to Back Hurricaines, and Now This!
Boca Grande merchants are sounding the alarm over proposed parking changes by the Lee County Commissioners that could devastate the island’s economy. Plans are underway to impose two-hour parking limits in the downtown district and restrict beach access parking to residents only. Local business owners argue these changes would discourage tourists and seasonal visitors from spending time—and money—on the island. Boca Grande thrives on leisurely day-trippers who browse boutiques, dine at local restaurants, and enjoy the beach, often for more than just a couple of hours. Limiting their ability to park would sharply reduce foot traffic and hurt already fragile small businesses. Merchants fear this could lead to declining sales, business closures, and a loss of the island's unique character. Additionally, restricting beach parking to residents would make public beach access nearly impossible for non-residents, a move many call exclusionary. The community is urging the commissioners to reconsider and seek a balanced solution that supports both residents and local commerce. Visitors are encouraged to voice their concerns and stand with Boca Grande’s business community. Together, we can preserve the charm, accessibility, and economic vitality of this beloved island

Boca Grande’s open beaches, vibrant shops, and historic churches depend on easy public access — but new parking restrictions threaten it all. Dozens of spaces have already been lost, and even harsher cuts are on the table. Without action, our community’s future could be locked away. We must defend the traditions that make Boca Grande special. Join us in the fight to Keep Boca Grande Open — for residents, visitors, and generations to come.
"Tighter parking restrictions will only hurt our local businesses. Visitors need easy, convenient access to shops and restaurants — making it harder to park will drive them elsewhere."
"Boca Grande’s charm comes from its welcoming atmosphere. Overregulating parking downtown risks creating unnecessary frustration for both residents and tourists who simply want to enjoy our community."
"Enhanced parking restrictions feel like a solution in search of a problem. Instead of adding new barriers, we should focus on maintaining accessibility and supporting the vibrancy of downtown life."
